China’s BYD Set to Become the World’s Largest EV Seller

Chinese electric-vehicle maker BYD is on track to overtake Tesla as the world’s top seller of battery-electric vehicles in 2025, according to recent industry data. If confirmed, this would mark the first time the Shenzhen-based company has surpassed its American rival in annual EV sales.

BYD reported that global sales of its fully electric vehicles climbed by nearly 28 % last year to over 2.25 million units. In comparison, analysts expect Tesla’s deliveries for 2025 to be around 1.65 million vehicles, reflecting slower demand in key markets.

The shift highlights how competition in the EV sector is evolving. Chinese brands—including BYD, Geely, and others—have been expanding rapidly both at home and abroad by offering a wider range of models and more aggressive pricing strategies, putting pressure on established players. Tesla, for its part, has responded by launching lower-priced versions of its best-selling models while it pursues new technology areas such as autonomous driving.

Despite BYD’s strong performance, its overall sales growth last year was the slowest in five years amid tough competition in its domestic market. However, the company’s push into international markets—especially in Europe and Southeast Asia—has bolstered its global position.

This development marks an important milestone in the global electric-vehicle industry, as market leadership shifts and competition intensifies across regions and technologies.
